Jal Neti (Saline Nasal Irrigation) for Cleansing, Allergies, Awareness and More:
Winter is just around the corner in Australia. The dreaded flu people suffer from is just around the corner. To help you all I want to explain an Ayurvedic/Yogic Cleansing technique which is excellent for clearing the sinuses and strengthening the subtle channels and membranes in the eyes, ears, nose and throat region. It is called Jal Neti or Nasal Irrigation. We all take our cars for changing the filters and the oils but we never consider cleaning our “own” air filters, put simply, our nostrils.
Although at first Jal Neti might appear gross or “dirty” to do, I can assure you after a few tries, you will wonder why people think it is difficult and avoid doing this great cleansing practice. This is one of the best morning practices you can adopt and it bestows a long list of excellent physical, emotional, mental and spiritual benefits. After about 22 year of daily practice, this morning ritual takes about 4 minutes. And I think it’s the best thing to do and I encourage you to do it. To help you out here is the drill.
Below are the steps (details) for practicing this wonderful cleansing and toning technique. If you have not tried it yet, I strongly suggest you do!
Tools Needed for Jal Neti:
Neti Pot (available in plastic, ceramic and steel – I use plastic –its light and easy to manage)
Salt (pure sea salt is preferred)
Warm Water – definitely not cold and not to hot
.
Calms the mind and senses. Promotes peace and tranquility.
How to do Jal Neti:
The best time for doing Jal Neti is first thing in the morning as part of your morning routine.
Fill the net pot with warm tap water,
Add salt to the water. The portions you should use are as follows. 1 level teaspoon of salt for 16 ounces of water (about 1/2 liter of water). This will bring the solution to the right level for the body to accept. You will know if you have put extra salt as you may feel a little uncomfortable. With daily practice you will work out what is right for you. Stick to it once you have nailed it.
Place the tip of the pot into the right nostril to form a gentle seal. Make sure the tip of the spout of the pot is designed to “seal ” the side of the nostril where you will be pouring in the saline solution.
Lean forward from the waist, open your mouth and tilt the head to the right. You will slowly work out the correct angle of the tilt that feels comfortable and the water is flowing well from the alternate nostril.
The water will start to enter through the right nostril and as you remain in this position, will start to flow out the left nostril. When you first start, you may find that there is very little or no flow for some time. Don’t panic or give up. You nose may be blocked and only time and regular practice will make you do this smoothly.
Breathe through the mouth during this time. Allow 200 mils or more of water to rinse through each side of the nostril.
Then remove the pot and slowly blow your nose to expel the rest of the water.
Once the water has been cleared out, do the other side. Water in through the left nostril and out through right.
Again blow out the water gently once done and you can repeat the cycle if you like.
Once you are done, do some bending forward moves to remove any trapped water. You will soon work out what move help you to expel the excess water.
The MANY Benefits of Jal Neti:
Excellent for those with allergies, hay fever, etc.
Excellent for those prone to getting colds and coughs.
Treats other respiratory ailments such as sinusitis, asthma, etc.
Good for the ears and eyes.
Promotes awareness, intuition and clarity
Helps with headaches and migraines.
Promotes a sense of freshness and alertness
Jal Neti Tips and helpful hints:
I regularly practice these techniques and want to share with you some important tips to help you with your own practice.
Make sure the water is not cool and is not too hot. Luke warm will be least irritating. Also, modify the salt content slightly to suit your body. If all is correct it will feel quite smooth and comfortable.
I have a small pot, so I mix the solution in a large glass first and then pour half into the pot to do one side, and then half to do the other.
Keep everything handy as that will go a long way in making this a regular practice. Keep all the necessary stuff in your bathroom shelf itself, including the salt.
I want to re-emphasize that DO NOT blow your nose hard and do not pinch your nostrils when blowing out. This is counter productive and will send rubbish up into your ear canals and upper membranes.
Keep a tissue with you as some of the water may leak out a few minutes after you are done.
You may do Jal Neti at least once a day, although for regular practice two times a day is ok.
Even though this does not sound like the most pleasant practice, it is really worth it and once you do it you will really enjoy the benefits and will soon be promoting it to others as well.
Hope this is of help to you. I would love to hear from you what your experience has been with this practice.
Cheers
Tony

Bird Binoculars – Things To Consider
April 29, 2010 by admin
Bird binoculars, are essential things for bird watching. If watching is your hobby, it’s nice to have your bird watching binoculars handy. Or if you’re considering presenting a binocular to your friend who loves bird watching, still you should shop savvy. Here are some things you need to consider while shopping for bird binoculars.
Magnification
It does matter how much the lenses are magnifying. If you love bird watching, you surely want a fully clear view or sight of birds that you find interest in. The standard configuration of magnification is – 7×35 (at leas). True, many people just use a regular pair for bird watching, but when you’re ready to expend a little bit more for getting multiple magnifications (8x to 10x), you’ll surely want the advantage of getting larger image of the birds.
Things depend a lot on your preferences when it comes to the size of the lens. If you’re in need of something lightweight, then you might want binoculars less magnified. However, if you’re looking for a much clearer view with extra light, you’ll be better of with larger lenses, though they’re likely to be a little bit heavier.
Flexibility & Focus
Try and move the barrels. Do they feel tight? When you’re shopping for bird binoculars, you should know that these things are supposed to move easily – which gives you a comfortable hold. That way, your binocular is not exposed to the risk of a breakage. Binoculars that are for hobbyist should offer the feel of comfort and ease of control.
Trying out the focus isn’t at all times easy – especially when you’re in a building. This is because stores aren’t usually very light. So, consider trying out a comparatively brighter side in a room. Then focus on any object, which is quite close. Also focus on one, which is relatively farther away. See whether it requires you to alter it too much for clearer view. If it does, you take that a clear indication of “poor quality”.
Exit Pupil
This might seem trivial at the first thought. But, it’s got clear influence on the degree of clarity of your view. The binoculars’ exit pupil actually is an amplified view of whatever image you’re seeing in the binoculars eye-piece. For getting the finest image from bird binoculars, you’ll need a quality exit pupil, which is not below 4mm.

Some wrist watches are exclusively meant for older kids. The way things are, kids usually have a pretty unique viewpoint about life and lifestyle. They’re not likely to look like kids watches. On the contrary, kids watches are likely to look more like the ones that adults wear.
So, watches meant for older kids can also come with a large array of features. For instance, they might feature a stopwatch, a ‘cool’ timer and a creative-looking calendar. Functions in such watches usually vary a bit depending on the watch’s being digital or analog.
Watches for older kids sometimes come with a sporty or casual look. Sometimes they come in basic colors, which aren’t too bright – at least, not as bright/flashy as younger children’s watches. Some come with attractive design features. Good examples are S-shaped band, meant to perk up flexibility. Special features make the watch’s face simpler to read.

Yoga: Hatha Yoga
April 24, 2010 by admin
Hatha yoga is an ancient hindu system of working with the human nervous system. Because it releases tension and endows one with renewed energy, far too many 20th century people, yoga teachers included, have come to look upon the venerable Indian physical science as solely an exercise for health and vitality of mind and body. It is that, but it is also much more. Hatha yoga practices are more spiritual than physical, more subtle than gross, more a means of understanding than an exotic way to relieve stress or limber up the body.
The sages who developed hatha yoga designed it as a way to gain conscious control of our life energies, a way to go within, to harmonize the external so the innermost Self could be encountered. To them, it was about states of consciousness, about living a divine life, and it was a preparation for meditation.
As you perform the asanas, concentrate on feeling the energies within the nerve currents. Sensitize yourself to knowing when the body has been in each position long enough to tune the nerve currents involved. Then shift smoothly into the next asana. It’s like a dance, a deliberate, fluid dance. During all postures, inhale using the diaphragm, not the chest muscles. Do not stretch unduly or force the body. Relax into the poses. Don’t worry if you can’t perform them all perfectly. In time, you will find the body becoming more flexible and supple. Free the mind of thoughts and tensions. You will be more aware, more alive, more serene.
While there are many more complex hatha yoga routines, these twenty-four asanas provide a balanced system for daily use. For the simple purpose of quieting the mind in preparation for meditation, this is all you will ever need. For best results, hatha yoga should be taught personally by a qualified teacher. These instructions and drawings are meant only as a rudimentary aid. For more elaborate regimens, inquire at a recognized school specializing in hatha yoga.
The scene of hatha yoga has a spiritual purpose – to balance physical and physic energies in preparation for meditation. It is not only meant to make us young, beautiful or creative, but to aid us in quieting the mind, body and emotions that we may awaken enlightened consciousness & know the Self within.

Magical Powers of Mind

We all well know that mind and body are interdependent. Healthy mind lives in a healthy body. But the influence of mind over body is however is much greater than that of body over mind. Body reacts to the slightest impulse of mind. If the mind is disturbed the body will also be troubled. We can see the strong influence the mind has over body especially with regard to emotions. These can be either positive or negative.
Anger, hate, jealousy, fear are negative emotions. Frequent emotional upsets affect the whole nervous system and may result in illness. Repeated hammering on nervous system is harmful to endocrine gland and may lead to aging and premature death. During a fir of rage we may loose control over our nerves.
There are some positive emotions also such as hope and confidence. They promote the health of nervous system and make body healthy. Love, joy an happiness bring peace to mind and make us optimistic. All this shows that mind is strong enough to influence the body in every possible way. So how can we expect to build up good health, a strong nervous system and proper functioning of our Endocrine glands, if we allow our mind to wander in any direction it likes? So illness is nothing other than the expression of the unequal distribution of vital forces throughout the human body. We can recover by redressing our equilibrium with the help of only Yoga, Pranayam and Meditation.

Ten Tips On How To Make The Most Of Your Yoga Session
April 22, 2010 by admin
An empty stomach – Yoga pays a lot of emphasis on core conditioning. Hence it is a good idea not to eat a heavy meal a couple of hours before your Yoga class. It will only leave you feeling stuffed and may even result in indigestion or stomach cramps. If you’ve decided to indulge in a heavy meal just before your class, consider skipping the class instead.
Reach a couple of minutes early
Yoga is not just another workout. It is a form of exercise that places a great deal of emphasis on centering yourself and breath-control. If you rush in at the last minute, gasping for breath, you are defeating the entire purpose behind practicing Yoga. Instead, try to reach a couple of minutes early, take a few deep breaths, calm the mind and empty your mind of all extraneous distractions.
Warm up
Like any other form of exercise, warming up plays an important role in Yoga too. Warming up ensures that you are able to perform the many stretching exercises that are a part of Yoga without straining your muscles.
Take your time
Do not allow your Yoga class to become a race to the finish line. It is more important to take the time to breathe properly while properly performing the various postures and remain centered at all times. You do not have to keep up with the rest of the class.
Quality is better than quantity
All the different Yoga postures have a specific purpose. Performing an exercise half-heartedly or not performing it properly completely negates the benefits of the exercise. Take the time to learn the various postures properly and ensure that you perform them in the correct manner.
Do not proceed on auto pilot
Yoga is not like running on the treadmill. You cannot watch television and perform Yoga at the same time. Yoga seeks to bring the mind and body in harmony with each other. This can only happen when you fully concentrate on each and every exercise.
Shut out the outside world
A Yoga class is your opportunity to shut out the outside world and recharge your mind and body. Leave all your worries outside the Yoga class and concentrate on performing the postures correctly. Live in the moment and for the duration of your class let your thoughts dwell only on your body and how the exercise is making you feel.
Breathe
It is easy to lose track of your breathing techniques while performing Yoga postures. Do not let this happen. Focus on your breathing and ensure that you are inhaling and exhaling as taught. Breath control is an important part of Yoga and skipping it will nullify all the beneficial effects of Yoga.
Do not overstrain
Yoga is not a competition. You do not have to compete with anyone else or yourself. If you get tired or feel pain, stop and rest until you feel better. If you feel continuous pain while holding a posture, inform your instructor. You may be doing something wrong.
Relax
Ultimately, Yoga is about relaxation and peace. Once the exercises are over, lie down with your eyes closed and feel your entire body relax itself. Let the mind also revel in this brief period of relaxation instead of making mental notes of the things you have to do after your Yoga class.
