Yoga Instruction Online … Bogus or Brilliant?
May 31, 2010 by admin
Yoga instruction isn’t limited to the classroom anymore, thanks to the internet. The World Wide Web has opened up a huge new realm of yoga possibilities. Unfortunately, it has opened up a whole new can of worms too!
Along with informative sites by knowledgeable teachers, there’s also a whole lot of incomplete and misleading information being spread by inexperienced yoga enthusiasts. This cut-and-paste cyber world makes it simple for anybody to create a website on any topic, yoga included, and load it up with content that makes the creator seem like they are an authority … when in most cases, they are far from it.
The bottom line about yoga instruction online is, Buyer Beware!
You can definitely learn yoga online … but you don’t want to be careless about it. As with anything online, proper research is your best friend.
Yoga instruction online is not really any different than in the living, breathing world. You need a teacher with adequate knowledge and experience. Unfortunately, that knowledge and experience is lacking in most yoga teachers today … on or offline.
The modern yoga world too often mistakes enthusiastic yoga teachers for knowledgeable ones, and the modern standards of a few hundred hours of yoga teacher training sure don’t help matters. These extremely basic requirements are a terribly insufficient barometer for gauging whether or not someone really does have the understanding and experience to properly teach yoga.
It may seem a lot easier to determine who is a good yoga teacher live and in person then over the internet. But that also relies on you, the student, having enough knowledge and experience to really know the difference. The Bhagavad Gita cautions us that in Kali Yuga, our present worldly age, “great orators are often mistaken for the wise,” and that has certainly become the case in the modern yoga scene.
Amid a sea of yoga junk on the internet today, there are definitely some nuggets of gold … some masters who have taken their immense knowledge and experience of yoga and are applying it through modern technology in unique and valuable ways. Sorting through the massive online yoga universe to find them takes work … but once you do, I’m sure you’ll feel that it was time and effort well spent.

General Rules for Yoga Beginners
May 26, 2010 by admin
If you are a newcomer, digest the first lesson: you’ll gain experience eventually. Don’t try to do everything at once. It is absurd to expect you will get lotus pose after the first lesson. Bear and forbear, your effort will be rewarding!
First look through some general rules:
• Yoga poses should not be practiced for long duration before 12 years old.
• To get the best results, do yoga exercises about 30 to 45 minutes every day.
• The best suited time is suggested to be early morning hours, but it all depends on your own biological clock. If you can’t wake up so early with ease, don’t concuss yourself.
• Your stomach should be empty before and while practicing, it is permissible to have a meal about 3.5 hours before training and drink one hour before.
• Protect a spacious, clean, airy, bright place for practicing. Try to avoid disturbances, deactivate your telephone, ask your relatives not to perturb you for some time.
• Yoga should not be practiced on bare floor but use mat or carpet below. Be careful, make sure, that its surface is not slidable. Find out more about yoga mats in the article Yoga Mats And Other Things You Need.
• Wear comfortable, loose and clean yoga clothes. Prefer natural fabrics. Undergarments is necessary. I have already written about yoga clothes in detailes here.
• Yoga conception anticipates vegetarian diet. If it is difficult, begin at the beginning. Leave out spicy and hot diet as much as possible, limit coffee.
• Women should not practice yoga during pregnancy and menses. There are special courses and yoga poses for pregnant woman.
• It is very important to take enjoyment in yoga and what you are doing.

Yoga Cushions-Making the art of Yoga easier and more comfortable
May 19, 2010 by admin
The B.K.S Iyengar School of Yoga, created by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Yoga that utilizes a lot of props such as Yoga Cushions, Yoga belts, Yoga blocks and Yoga bolsters to assist the practitioner in performing asanas or postures. These props enable individuals who are new to Yoga practice to perform the asanas (stances) in an easier and unrestricted manner without having to over-extend themselves. This holds especially true for women who are pregnant, elderly people and ailing individuals as well.
Similarly, there is another branch of Yoga called Medical Yoga, which is a blend of Hatha Yoga and advanced medical diagnostic techniques such as X-rays, M.R.I., etc. Medical Yoga uses 3-6 Hatha Yoga asanas with the aid of specifically designed props such as Yoga belts, Yoga chairs and Yoga Cushions to treat patients.
Besides these two schools, individuals who are new to Yoga can utilize these props to help them overcome any initial problems they may face in terms of lack of flexibility and insufficient core balance which is needed to carry out some Yoga postures.
In this short article, we will look at the way Yoga Cushions can aid practitioners. The first type of Yoga Cushion is the Zafu cushion.
Zafu cushions are of two types; the traditional one being round shaped and normally stuffed with buckwheat hulls, natural kapok or organic cotton. The reason for these types of fillings is firstly that they are comfortable materials for people to be seated on for extended periods of time and that they are durable and long lasting as well.
The other type is the crescent or kidney shaped Zafu cushion, which is favored by individuals who sit in the cross-legged position for extended periods of time.
The advantage of Zafu cushions is that due to it their ergonomic design they give the Yoga practitioner a proper posture, enable better spine alignment and at the same time stabilize his or her back. Due to the fact that it has no back support, a Zafu cushion lets the spine to assume its natural curvature and thereby enables for deeper breathing. This allows for comfortable seating and alleviates any pain that may be caused on the knees, ankles and back. The end result of its use is that an individual can concentrate completely on the task of mediating and enjoy all the benefits the exercise has to offer.
Normally, Zafu cushions work better on Zabuton mats. The reason for this is that they provide a base for the Zafu cushions and give additional support for the back, knees and ankles and prevent any strain or pain that may be caused. This also makes sitting on hard surfaces such as wood or stone easier. Zabutons are also filled with buckwheat hulls, kapok or cotton.
Yoga Cushions give a practitioner the advantages of proper spine alignment, additional comfort when asanas are carried out and added support or cushioning. Nowadays, there are many options available and choosing one’s right Yoga Cushion is a simple and straightforward procedure.

The different kinds of Yoga Bolsters and their benefits
May 17, 2010 by admin
At the start of Yoga, some people find it difficult to carry out certain postures due to a variety of reasons such as lack of flexibility, difficulty in holding the posture, etc. In these cases, using Yoga props is an excellent option. Having said that, a person who is flexible may opt for Yoga props because of the additional support and comfort, thereby making the entire experience of Yoga more full and beneficial.
One of the most popular and versatile Yoga props are Yoga Bolsters.
Yoga Bolsters are types of cushions or pillows that are used in different kinds of Yoga schools such as Bikram Yoga, B.K.S Iyengar Yoga and Kripula Yoga. Yoga Bolsters are designed in such a manner that they provide support to and relieve tension in the neck, back, abdomen and legs while performing various kinds of postures. Due to the fact that Yoga Bolsters are firm, they provide cushioning to the back and lower body while practicing Yoga asanas (stances) in the supine position. Yoga Bolsters also stretch out the body completely and align the spine.
There are 3 different varieties of Yoga Bolsters, which are
Cylindrical bolsters
Rectangular bolsters
Pranayama bolsters
Cylindrical Bolsters
Cylindrical Bolsters are firmly packed and are normally heavier and larger than rectangular and Pranayama bolsters. When placed under the neck, knees or ankles they provide support and relieve and tension that may occur in these areas. Additionally, when placed under the knees they lengthen the lower part of the back, which enables deeper breathing. Cylindrical bolsters also provide additional comfort and support which results in practitioners increasing their stretches.
Rectangular Bolsters
Rectangular bolsters have a flat surface and this provides stability to the user. They also provide great relief for any pressure that may occur in the lower back. In addition, the curved sides of the rectangular bolster offer comfort and support for spinal stretches and restorative postures.
Breathing Bolsters
Also called the Pranayama bolster, the breathing bolster – as the name suggests – is used to aid the breathing. Normally this kind of bolster is used when carrying out Pranayamas as it lends support to the spine and allows for slower and deeper breathing. It is different from the rectangular bolster in that it is narrower. When placed on the spine it supports the lengthy muscles that run on its sides, thereby relaxing it completely and letting the chest expand fully.
Choosing a Yoga Bolster which suits you the best it a personal choice and depends entirely on the individual. The best and most effective technique is to lie down on a hard surface and completely relax. Then make a note of the parts of your body which are not touching the ground fully. Depending on the outcome you can realize which parts of your body require a bolster and then choose one accordingly.

Ashtanga Yoga Poses – What's the point, really?
May 17, 2010 by admin
“Ashtanga yoga poses” is a frequently search phrase on Google. There are two very different ideas about that term ashtanga yoga today though, so the website you land on might not be quite what you’re looking for.
The Sanskrit word Ashtanga means “eight limbs” (ashta means eight, and anga means limb), referring to the traditional system of yoga comprised of 8 essential, interconnected parts.
But the term ashtanga yoga has also gotten attached to a modern exercise system that focuses heavily on part, the yoga pose. Yoga poses, though, are only the tip of the iceberg in yoga. If you don’t go very far beyond them, you simply AREN’T DOING YOGA.
Are you a one-limbed yogi?
Most yoga enthusiasts know that there’s more to yoga than just stretching. What that “more” is, though, probably isn’t too clear for a lot of folks.
You’ve probably heard about the morals and ethis part … the yamas and niyamas. But we’ve all had enough of the “how to be good lessons” growing up, haven’t we? We’re adults now, so who needs more of it now?
It’s the stretching we want. Ashtanga yoga poses keep Madonna looking pretty fit in her 50s, and Jennifer Aniston looking younger every day. I’m willing to give it a shot then.
Oh, and you know about the breathing too, right? Pranayama is it? It sure doesn’t get any more BORING than that, right? Anyhow, we all know how to breath, so why bother?
There’s more to yoga though (much more than those first four limbs that you probably just skimmed over anyhow). What, however, is the question. The higher stages of yoga never get much press, and that’s the big shame …
… Because that’s actually where REAL YOGA begins. Yeah, I’m sorry to break it to you, but if all you’ve been doing is twisting and bending your body and doing a little alternate nostril breathing here and there, then you haven’t even really started yoga yet.
If that’s true, what’s the point of the first 4 limbs then?
Preparation. The first four limbs can be referred to as Hatha Yoga … the last 4 as Raja Yoga. And as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (a classic yoga text) tells us, Hatha and Raja are two ends of the same pole … “Hatha is a ladder for ascending to Raja, and Raja is the goal of Hatha.”
So yama and niyama, asana, and pranayama all prepare us for the higher stages, where REAL YOGA starts to happen. Hatha yoga is a necessary part of the yoga journey, but if we get stuck there, we’re going to miss the best part of the trip!
Why didn’t your teacher mention that?
Well, to be honest, very few students have enough dedication and discipline to get to those higher yoga levels. Which is probably a good thing, because there are also very few yoga teachers who have really made it there themselves (unfortunately, becoming a certified yoga teacher today doesn’t require mastery of yoga.)
To be fair, these higher levels of yoga are no walk in the park … but that doesn’t change the facts. If we really want to experience the amazing transformative power of yoga, we need to climb higher. Most people, I know, prefer to remain in the land of endless preparation. My only question for them is … what exactly are you preparing for?

Healthy Body With Yoga

Who does not want to have a flat stomach? No need to have strong muscles, we can get a strong stomach, flexible, and not burdened with a pile of fat. Start doing yoga right now….!! Abdominal muscles is the body that has a very complex structure. In addition to protecting cavities containing vital organs, he also played an important role supporting the load of the spine and the main actors in a variety of body movements, but it is unfortunate, many people are focusing on the side of the abdominal muscles than the main function of these abdominal muscles. So abdominal muscles treatment is only valid at times as they like. When the pile began to coat the fat, lazy feeling to come block. Anyway many references to the ideal stomach is more directed at the poster images closely aesthetic side, with super-flat stomach illustration minimal fat, sometimes accompanied by a melt sports activities as well as a series of programs diet lived. so that we can get a form like that. No wonder, finally we say, “Better to have a potbelly than torture”. Elasticity Many people think, our stomach muscles are divided into the 3 elements; belly top, middle, and below. In fact, the abdominal wall consists of a single unit, with 4 major muscle: rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and transverse abdominis. The fourth of these muscles work as a unit in supporting human life. In order to appear tough in the extreme, muscle fibers must have a shorter than usual. It’s quite difficult for life normal, because we need the elastic and muscle length to make the movement of the body more freely. Muscles in the abdomen do not need to appear tough and hard like a photograph or a bikini clad model bodybuilder, However the just are in healthy condition. In order to appear tough in the extreme, muscle fibers must have a shorter than usual. It’s quite difficult for life normal, because we need the elastic and muscle length to make the movement of the body more freely. Rectus abdominis, for example. Muscles are identical with the term “six pack” is contributing to help us move the head, body arched backward, expands lung capacity. Similarly when we breathe. Rectus abdominis muscles must be sufficiently flexible when enlarged, along with the movement of muscles diaphragm, to make room for the lungs to expand. Only the abdominal muscles elastic enough who can do this well. In addition to practicing crunch or sit up, doing “yoga asana” is also very good in stimulating the abdominal muscles. Not just working to strengthen the abdominal muscles, yoga provides a holistic approach. Abdominal muscles is seen as part of the unity of the human body that must be maintained in accordance with its function. According from the experts, yoga is not only the anatomical work of psychology. Learning Yoga at Home – the pros and cons
May 15, 2010 by admin
Doing yoga at home is not just for yoga teachers and hard-core yogis. It’s what we should all be striving to do, in my opinion. Now, with the internet, it’s easier than ever … but potentially dangerous too!
The internet didn’t exist though, when I first started yoga. Perhaps that was a good thing. The only real option (to me at least) was going to India … the source, which is exactly what I did, spending years in yoga ashrams and studying with various yoga teachers along the way.
But still, I felt like something was missing. It wasn’t until I found Swami Gitananda’s “Yoga Step By Step” correspondence course that the “yoga lightbulb(s) finally came on. Yeah, I know … but this was no ordinary yoga book. It was a yoga masterpiece, and my understanding of yoga has never been the same since.
But what I really got from it was an awareness of how much is missing from yoga in the modern yoga class approach, and how, when done skilfully, so much more about yoga can be taught on paper and with visuals. Now with the video capabilities of the internet, we can leap even further.
I’ve been working on that for the past few years … trying to figure out how to effectively teach yoga online without compromising the integrity of yoga. There have been many ups and downs along the way, and now, based on the feedback I get, I’d say that I’m doing a fairly good job … at least compared to what else is available online so far.
I still teach yoga classes because I believe there is much to be gained from them. But my experience has shown me how limiting they can be, especially for teaching students how to safely and confidently practice yoga at home, on their own.
The Internet has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for yoga, but even though there are tens of thousands of yoga websites online already, most yoga teachers who created them still seem to be stuck in their yoga classes … yet to realize the great teaching potential of this global medium.
Teaching people how to practice yoga at home, from home, I think, is the way of the yoga future. If only just a few yoga teachers start to realize how to use the internet to effectively share the teachings of yoga and get more people off the couch and doing yoga at home, then that future looks pretty enlightened to me.

How To Correctly Install Double Showers
May 13, 2010 by admin
These days, most homes fight when its time to shower but to all you who find such problems in your homes every morning, the double shower is your solution to a good and easy life. These showers are not only easy to use but are very easy to maintain and also brings so much peace to your home. These showers are mostly made to suit different height sizes and although most people think master bathrooms especially are the best when you decide to use them; I think all bathrooms can use them also. Sometimes, double shower installation is very difficult and requires special plumbing services. All in one double shower are now available for the use of everyone who is interested in it. There are numerous double shower heads in town at the moment that are very effortless to fix only if you know how to.
First get rid of old shower heads and tie it up around the bottom of the shower head, rotating it clockwise; use the adjustable wrench in doing this. After that, hold water pipe that connect to shower head by means of channel locks; this will prevent it from slanting. Also, before you do that, remember to turn off the main water flow to the shower; if it can’t be done it doesn’t matter since fixing can be done with the water on.
Apply Teflon tape to the threads of the water pipe in a clockwise movement which is the same way for the shower heads to make sure that it is safe and does not take out; this will be after you clean with some steel wool. Use your hand to stiffen the shower heads onto the water pipe also in a clockwise motion. Later, use the adjustable wrench to extra stiffen it but be careful because; it does not have to be too stiff.
Yes, this is all it takes to fix a double shower. Never forget to seek the services of a professional if you find it difficult because; it will be very bad to make things in your home worse by fixing the shower wrongly. Also, remember to always check the shower head by turning it on to ensure that all is well. Sometimes, water drips from the bottom of the water head but all you have to do is to stiffen the shower head little by little till you see no dribble.
